What is Communion?
26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Communion is a ritual where Christians partake in the eating of bread and wine usually once a month. The bread represents the physical body of Christ. The wine represents the blood of Christ. The act of taking communion will not save your soul or give you a first class seat to heaven. Communion is not a responsibility or commitment. Communion is a celebration of the gospel. We take Communion to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for all people. Jesus gave his life for us so we could start a new life free from sin. He gave his life so we could have a new relationship with God. The bible tells us this in 1 Peter 3:18: “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.”
Communion is a not only a reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for us, but it is also a reminder of his promise of eternal life which is foretold to us all in: John 6 verse 53 -54. Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
When Christians take Communion we should do three things:
First, we should look back at the cross and remember Christ died for our sins because of his love for us.
Second, we are to look ahead. Communion is an observance to remind us that Jesus will come again.
Third, Communion is a time to look within. We are to look within and ask the Holy Spirit to show us any areas of our lives that may not be pleasing to God. If there is something that isn't right, this is the time to deal with it. Communion is an ideal time to make a commitment or re-commitment to Jesus Christ.
